Reformer pilates vs mat pilates: the real differences

Same method, very different experience. Here is an honest comparison of the reformer and the mat, from someone who loves both.

Reformer pilates vs mat pilates: the real differences

The core difference: springs versus bodyweight

Mat pilates uses your own bodyweight and gravity. That sounds easier and is often harder: with no equipment to help, your body has to stabilise everything itself, and there is no way to make an exercise lighter when your form starts to slip.

The reformer adds springs, and springs work in both directions. They can load a movement far beyond bodyweight, and they can also assist it, supporting part of your weight so you can move well before you are strong. That two-way range is why the reformer suits complete beginners and advanced movers at the same time.

Feedback you can feel

On a mat, it is easy to cheat without knowing it. On a reformer, the carriage tells on you. If it jerks, you have lost control. If it glides, you are working from the right place. That physical feedback speeds up learning enormously, which is why many people feel more progress in a month of reformer work than a year of casually done mat classes.

Where the mat wins

Portability and independence. A mat travels with you and costs nothing. Mat skills also transfer straight onto the reformer, and vice versa. The honest answer is that they complement each other: the reformer builds strength and control with support, and the mat proves you can hold it with nothing but your own body.

How to choose

At Casa Reformer in Nerja we teach on eight reformers in groups of up to eight, so the coach can set the springs for exactly where you are today. Read what is coming, or join the founding members to be first on the schedule.
