Reformer lunges: single-leg strength for hills and stairs
Life happens one leg at a time: stairs, hills, getting out of chairs, every single step. The reformer lunge is where that truth becomes training.
What it is
One foot stands on the stable platform of the machine, the other rests on the carriage. As the carriage glides away, you sink into a lunge; as you drive back up, the springs resist the return. Unlike a floor lunge, the surface under your back foot is moving, so your standing leg and trunk have to organise themselves around instability, which is exactly what makes it valuable.
Why single-leg work matters so much
Almost everyone has a stronger side, and two-leg exercises let it quietly do the extra work for years. Lunges take the negotiation away. They also train balance under load, the quality that keeps hikers upright on descents and, decades later, is the difference between a stumble and a fall. Strength you can stand on one leg with is strength that transfers to everything.
What it works
- Glutes, especially the side glutes that keep your pelvis level on one leg.
- Quads and hamstrings through a deep, controlled range.
- Hip flexors of the back leg, lengthening under control, a relief for anyone who sits.
- Balance and ankle stability, trained honestly by the moving carriage.
Scaling it
Beginners start with hands supported and heavier springs, which keep the carriage steadier. Progress means lighter springs, deeper range, arms free, then loaded variations and tempo work. The same shape serves a cautious first-timer and an athlete in the same class, on different spring settings.
Common mistakes
- Letting the front knee dive inward. Knee tracks over the middle of the foot, always.
- Leaning the chest forward. The torso stays tall; the legs do the work.
- Chasing depth before control. A shallow lunge you own beats a deep one that owns you.
Legs that carry you
Nerja is a town of hills, stairs and trails, and reformer lunges are our love letter to all three. Casa Reformer opens at Calle Angustias 28 after the summer of 2026; founding members get the schedule first.
